Attachment to Rama Avatar 2

AzhwAr continues the words of rAkShasas. He uses the phrase ‘kuzhamaNi tooramE, which is wined by him, not found in any pASuras of other AzhwArs. Here too the rAkShasas eulogize the victory of rAma over the army of rAvaNa.

AzhwAr begins this pASura beautifully saying EttuhinrOm nAttazhumba irAman tirunAmam’. In Sreemad rAmAyaNa it is said ‘rAmO, rAmO rAma iti prajnAnAm aBavat kathA:’ (except chanting His name rAma, rAma, rAma, there was no other name uttered) ‘rAma Bootam jagadaBoot rAmE rAjyam praSAsati’. Similarly even lankApuri was full of rAmanAma.

nambee! sugreevA! SOttam—SOttam is the word to indicate dAsatva when they make anjali. Perhaps it is in the tamizh version of the Sanskrit word ‘StOtram’. The rAkShasas think if they are able to please sugreeva mahArAja there is no difficulty in pleasing Sree rAma and vAnaras as well.

vArttai pESeer—It is interpreted in two ways—You speak to Your vAnara soldiers not to kill us (or) You speak to us so that You vAnaras think we are friends and therefore will not kill us. periyavAchchAn piLLai prefers to take the second meaning.

When viBeeShaNa came to surrender to rAma it was sugreeva who spoke against taking him. Therefore the rAkShasas try to appeal to him first.

Oh! hanumAn! Oh! sugreeva! Oh! angada! Oh! naLa! Don’t kill us. We don’t want to die like the valiant son of rAvaNa, indrajit and kuBakarNa, the brother of rAvaNa died by His arrows. They died because they never once uttered His name and never once felt He is the swAmi.

Oh! vAnara heroes! Your swAmi Sree rAmachandra is the Lord of all the worlds. He has come as yama to kill our king rAvaNa. This we saw with our own eyes. We, hereafter, cannot lift up our own heads and walk proudly. Hence we submit ourselves to You and sing pallANDu to each one of you. Not only that, we dance kuzhamaNi dooram singing Your victory.

Our king rAvaNa could not desist his desire for women. That was the cause of his ruin. He was killed by your swAmi Sree rAma since he kidnapped His wife seeta pirATTi now He lies dead in the ground to be pecked by eagles and eaten by ghosts. We salute His younger brother lakShmaNa and sing his guNas, and dance kuzhamaNi dooram.

Oh! vAnara heroes! Oh! Sree rAma Baktas! We don’t give you the trouble of fighting. We declare ourselves as defeated. We accept Your victory. You had to fight because we proudly pulled our chests and came to challenge you. Now we realize our mistake. When even rAvaNESwara is lying dead, how can we face you and challenge you? We have shed our egos and humbly request you to spare our lives. We dance kuzhamaNi dooram like huge dark mountains dancing. Enjoy the performance and be pleased at us.

kunru pOla ADuhinrOm—It should not be taken to mean we dance like dancing mountains but to mean we dance who are like mountains.

Oh! vAnara heroes! Oh! sugreeva! your king Sree rAmachandra has accomplished an impossible feat of building a bridge across the sea, crossed it to reach lanka, seized the city guarded by strong forts, challenged us to war, killed our mighty king rAvaNa, and terrorized the rAkShasa army with His bows and arrows. We have lost all hopes of winning the war. We declare our defeat and accept Your victory. Please don’t kill us. We celebrate Your victory by dancing kuzhamaNi dooram .

The rAkShasas singing ‘kuzhamaNi dooram’ and ‘taDam pongattam pongO’ invite the others who are hesitating to join them and who are standing at a distance. They are haughty and submissive like rAvaNa who said ‘even if i am split into two i shall not bend before rAma’. They stand there twisting their mustache and beating the chests, wanting to continue war with the vAnaras.

mATTramAvadu ittanaiyE—We don’t wan to explain in detail the ‘veera parAkrama’ of Sree rAma and His army. You have seen it for yourselves. We want to briefly say this- ‘vammin arakkaruLLeer’- we are not inviting rAkShasas like viBeeShaNa who have already joined their side. We want to invite only those like You who have not yet surrendered yourselves to rAma, if you want to save yourselves come and join our group and dance with us. kuzhamaNi dooram, sing hanumAn’s glories.

ATTral SAnra tol pirappil anumanai—hanumAn was very strong since birth. As soon as he was born he saw the rising red sun. Thinking it to be a fruit he jumped near the sun to gulp him.

In this pASura also the rAkShasas call the others standing aloof. ‘Oh! rAkShasas! Come and join us, you have seen how Sree rAma destroyed in no time the elephants, the galloping horses, with His terrible arrows. The vAnaras are His dAsas. He is the rakShaka of not only the vAnaras but us too if we surrender to Him. Let us dance kuzhamaNi dooram before Him. dASarathi is our only rakShaka. Let us worship Him and save ourselves.

Oh! vAnaras! Our king rAvaNa who always carries a long, broad and fearful spear is killed. We also feel very weak mentally and physically. We have surrendered ourselves to your king Sree rAma. We shall obey His orders diligently. Therefore Oh! naLa! Oh! sugreeva! Oh! hanumAn! Oh! angada! We shall run away never to return back. Please don’t follow us to kill.

iLaittOm- We are weak physically after a long war and mentally after rAvaNa’s death. Our appearance is very pitiable that You won't have a mind to kill us.

kooDikkooDi—We are standing in groups not to scheme a plan against You but to dance in groups.

tirumangai AzhwAr has sung these ten pASuras about Sree rAma pirAn who defeated the rAkShasa king rAvaNa and his other soldiers in the battle of lanka. The remaining soldiers who feared Him plead vAnaras to spare their lives. They accept the defeat and dance kuzhamaNi dooram. Oh! BAgavatas! You also sing and dance the guNas of rAmapirAn.

  1. Great kainkaryam translating Sri PVP's vyakhyanams. Is there a quick link where any pashuram from nay pathu /decade can be accessed quickly?
