Several Divyadesams

tirumangai AzhwAr had disgust over this ignorant dark world full of samsAris. He, therefore, wanted to go to paramapada. But BagavAn’s desire was otherwise. He lured him by showing some beautiful divya dESas. AzhwAr enjoyed going from one tirupadi to the other and enjoyed His BagavadanuBava. Again his desire for paramapada whooped up. He wanted Him to help him do so. Now he is ready to go for the never-to-return-back onward journey. But like a newly married girl who wants to meet her friends before she leaves for her mother-in-law’s house, AzhwAr visits some of his favorite tirupadis.

This tirumozhi is different from the rest in the fact that there are two tirupadis in each pASura except the tenth one. Thus there are 18 tirupadis in this tirumozhi.

Yesterday i met tiruneermalar neervaNNa perumAn and today i shall visit tirukkaNNamangai to worship pattarAvi perumAL to bid goodbye before i leave for paramapada.

oru nar chuTTram—He is the only bandhu who does everything that is good to me. This word suggests the essence of all the philosophy.

enakku uyir—Though He is truly the ‘uyir’ of all the creatures He is ‘enakku uyir’ specially because i cease to exist if i don’t see Him.

oN poruL—One may even lose life in the endeavour to obtain what they aim at but BagavAn gives immortality when we seek Him and get Him.

He who is beautiful like sapphire, desirable like gold, effulgent like lightning, my very swAmi who made me His dAsa and He who is sarvESwara gave me His darSan in tiruvEngaDam yesterday. Today i shall go to tiruttaNkAvu to see Him.

tiruttaNkAvu— is near kAncheepuram and is popularly called viLakkoLi emberumAn sannidhi. tiruttaNkAl is another divya dESa which is in pANDya nADu.

3. vElaiyAlilai paLLivirumbiya

Yesterday i went to tiruvAli and saw Him who lies on a tiny banyan leaf floating in the praLaya water, who is as sweet and enjoyable as milk and nectar and who wear tuzhasi mAla being worshipped by all as the sarvESwara. Today i shall go to tirunAngoor and enjoy His darSan.

jnAlam unni—is interpreted in two ways—one who is meditated by the world and who meditates on the people (for rakShaNa).

4. tuLakkamil SuDarai avuNanuDal

emberumAn who is ever effulgent, who killed hiraNyAsura as narasimha moorti by splitting open his body, who is very sweet like nectar and who is the lamp of all the nitya sooris showering His light of grace on them was seen by me in tiruppEr, whom i shall see today in tiruveLLarai.

5. SuDalaiyil SuDuneeran amarndadOr

Siva lives in the cremation ground and smears his body with the ashes of the burnt bodies. He had a kapAla stuck to his hand which emberumAn removed with His sweat. i saw Him in tirunaraiyoor yesterday. i shall see Him in tirumeyyam today.

uLLam urukki uN—He had entered my mind. Since then my heart is melting. But i feel very grateful to Him to have done this to me who is really a worthless fellow.

viDalai—There are several meaning to this. One is ‘ever young’. periyavAchchAn piLLai has taken it to mean the chief of the deserted land (leela viBooti). Since it is as good as a desert (or) it can mean ‘He has entered my mind which is as good as a desert’.

6. vAnai Aramudam tandavaLLalai

AnaivATTi aruLum amarar tam

i worshipped Him who is as sweet as honey, who killed kuvaLayApeeDa and who churned nectar for the selfish dEvas and who is the Lord of nitya sooris in tiruchchErai. Today i shall go and see Him in tirukkuDandai.

He is gOpAla kriShNa loved by all the women of AyarpADi. ‘peNDir vAzhwAr ninoppArai perudum ennum AsaiyAlE kaNDavarhaL pokkozhinAr kaNNiNaiyAl kalakka nOkki vaNDulAm poonguzhalinAr un vAyamudam uNNa vENDi koNDu pOvAn vandu ninrAr’ ‘mundai nan murai anbuDai mahaLir murai murai tandam kurangiDai irutti endaiyE endan kula perunjuDarE ezhu muhir kaNattu ezhil kavar ErE undai yAvan enruraippa’.—periyAzhwAr tirumozhi. Thus He was the favourite of the gOpis is well known.

In tiruveKa He is SESha SAyee. Hence AzhwAr says AndaT pAzhiyil paLLi virumbiya’.

8. pattarAviyai pAnmadiyai aNi

emberumAn is like a spotless moon, the very Atma of His Baktas, beautiful like a pearl, a sapphire and a diamond. i saw Him in tirumAliruSOlai yesterday, today i shall go to tiruviNNahar.

pattarAvi is interpreted in both ways as He is the Avi of His Baktas and Baktas are His Atma (jnAni tu Atmaiva mE matam—Bagavat geeta)

9. kambamA kaLiranjikkalanga Or
kombukoNDa kuraikazhal koottanai |

nambanaiSenru kANDum nAvAyuLE || Nine ||

i saw Him in tiukkOTTiyoor where there are thick forests. He was very powerful to pluck out a tusk of the fearful kuvaLayApeeDa, very charming with kazhal in His tiruvaDi walking wonderfully causing Bakti and trust in the minds of Baktas. Today i shall go to tirunAvAi to see Him and worship Him.

10. peTTramALiyai pEril maNALanai
kaTTranool kalikanri uraiSeidu |
SoTTriramivai Solliya toNDarhaTku
aTTramillai aNDamavarku ATchiyE || Ten ||

tirumangai AzhwAr has sung these pASuras on maNavALan of tiruppEr who is born as gOpAla kriShNa to graze the cattle of AyarpADi. Those who read and sing them will go to paramapada and will rule over the place.

kaTTranool kalikanri—It is well known from the history that AzhwAr never had any formal gurukula education. Still he calls himself kaTTra nool kali kanri. periyavAchchAn piLLai—BagavAn Himself did upadESa of aShTAkShara mantra to AzhwAr. This mantra contains the essence of all the vEdas. Hence what use is of formal education? Hence he is quite right in calling himself ‘learned AzhwAr’.
